CENTERBURG — The Centerburg girls volleyball team won the KMAC outright Thursday night on their home court, using power and finesse to sweep Northmor 3-0.
The Lady Trojans capped a perfect 14-0 Knox-Morrow Athletic Conference season with the win and a 20-2 overall record.
“This has been a really fun bunch,” head coach Abigail Boudinot said in describing this season’s team.
“We are now 20-2, and we’ve had really good competition. Being competitive in the conference is always a great thing, and to win the conference outright with no losses is really awesome.”
On Thursday, the Trojans displayed the skills that brought them to this point, taking the first set 25-15 and smothering the Golden Knights 25-11 in the second.
Set three proved to be a bit more competitive.
Northmor grabbed a quick 3-2 lead. After two prolonged serve rallies that tried even the most well-conditioned player and brought fans from both schools to their feet in appreciation, the score was tied 10 times before the Trojans finally pulled away for a 25-18 sweep.
“Northmor did an excellent job. They really reined in their errors, and not having errors in a game makes it really tough on us,” Boudinot said.
Looking back, moving forward
Looking back over the season and on to what lies ahead, the coach named three players she is counting on to lead the team to the next level.
“We have the returning [KMAC] Player of the Year in Sedona Weisbrod. When people watch us, they are going to be watching out for her,” Boudinot said. “In addition, we have Jazmyn Larimore. And then Molly Kain, she is a huge backbone of our team.”
Boudinot is anxious to test the mettle of her squad.
“We are a really hungry team, ready to turn some pages and be ready for what is next,” she said.
While it is in the DNA of coaches to want to win, that desire runs deeper for Boudinot. The Centerburg grad is thrilled to be in her sixth year as volleyball head coach at her alma mater.
“It means everything to me. Centerburg is where I developed my love for coaching and teaching, and to give back means everything,” the coach said.
Boudinot took a moment to thank those who are in the stands.
“We appreciate all of the support we have from the community,” she said.
The Lady Trojans will host Columbus Academy Oct. 20 at 6 p.m. in the Division V sectional finals.
