Britney Ann Misencik, age 49, of Fredericktown, Ohio, passed away on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. She was born on January 31, 1977, in Mount Vernon, Ohio, to James and Christine (Ward) Misencik.
Britney graduated with honors from Fredericktown High School in 1995. She went on to earn her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Kent State University, following in the artistic footsteps of both of her parents.
Britney was a true free spirit — a “hippie chick” at heart who marched to the beat of her own drum. She could always be found in a long, flowy, flower-print skirt, her signature long feather earrings swinging as she moved. An artist like both of her parents, she carried the family’s creative gift in a way her siblings didn’t, and for years she was the muse behind her mother’s watercolor paintings, which captured Britney through every season of her life.
At 27, Britney was diagnosed with breast cancer. She faced a recurrence at 30, and the very treatment that saved her life left her with heart failure and a prognosis of just five years to live. She defied that prognosis for years beyond it. Britney was a warrior in every sense of the word — she never gave up, and she never let her illness define her. Between appointments, hospital stays, and setbacks, she built a full and joyful life.
After her first diagnosis, Britney moved in with her sister’s family to help raise her nieces and nephews, affectionately known to her as “the pickles.” Though she never had children of her own, she poured her whole heart into being their aunt, doting on them as if they were hers. It gave her deep joy and purpose, and she cherished every moment with Camden, Emmerson, Brady, and Bailey.
Britney found peace in her garden, where she grew and canned with pride each year, freely sharing her harvest with neighbors and friends throughout the community. She also raised butterflies for many years, drawn to their beauty and to the freedom they represented — a freedom her health so often kept just out of reach.
In addition to her parents, Britney is survived by her nieces and nephews, Camden and Emmerson Smith, and Bailey and Brady Misencik; her sister, Tiffani Misencik; and her brother, Nathan Misencik.
Britney is preceded in death by her step-father, James Bunn.
Britney also had a deep love for her animals over the years. Her cats, Izzy, Miles Davis, and Lyza, were constant companions, and she lovingly took in her dog, Belle, from her sister during a difficult time — giving Belle a home, and finding comfort and companionship of her own in return.
Britney passed away on the birthday of her sister and best friend, Tiffani — and Tiffani considers it an honor to share the day with her. From now on, every trip around the sun will also be a celebration of Britney’s life and all that she meant to her.
A celebration of life will take place at a later date.
