My Fellow Neighbors and Residents of West High Street,
There is a spirit that moves through our town, a spirit as enduring as the bricks that pave our streets and as bright as the history we share.
As we look toward the 250th anniversary of our great nation, that historic milestone we call America 250, we find ourselves at a unique moment.
We have the chance to show the world, and more importantly, to show ourselves the pride we take in our home.
West High Street is more than just a thoroughfare; it is the front porch of Mount Vernon. It is the first impression we give to the traveler and the lasting memory we leave for our children.
The good folks at the Knox County Landmarks Foundation, through their ReHHUP program, have stepped forward with a plan to help spruce up this gateway. They’re offering a helping hand, but you know as well as I do that no foundation or committee can ever replace the heart of a neighborhood.
The true strength of America has never been found in Washington; it’s been found in the driveway, on the porch, and over the garden fence where neighbor helps neighbor.
I am calling on each of you to join hands with the Foundation. Let’s clear away the clutter, let’s repair the broken, and let’s put a fresh coat of pride on the homes that define our corner of the world.
By the time the Fourth of July rolls around, let’s make sure that when someone drives down West High Street, they don’t just see houses, they see a community that cares, a community that remembers its past, and a community that has a vision for its future.
It’s a big task, but nothing is impossible for people who are willing to work together. Let’s get to work. Let’s make our street a shining example for all to see.
God bless you, and God bless this neighborhood.
