MOUNT VERNON — Starting a side hustle is a good way to make extra income and pursue your passion — and it sounds easy enough to do.

Side Hustle Nation found that 80 percent of the 5,500 entrepreneurs it polled started a side gig to earn extra income to make ends meet, pay off debt, or save, spend or invest.

“Forty percent of Americans have a side hustle, whether that’s Mary Kay, Tupperware, or many others. Internationally, 70 percent have a side hustle,” Monica Swank, ASPIRE/ADP coordinator at the Knox County Technical Center, said.

However, statistics show that over 60 percent of side hustles fail.

The Knox County Technical Center is offering a free pilot entrepreneur class to help Knox County residents achieve success in their side gig.

“Think how to start a business and create a marketing plan,” Swank said of the course. “There’s a lot people have to be prepared for.”

The 12-week online course partners with SCORE representatives from the Knox County Chamber of Commerce.

“We’re pretty pumped about bringing it on,” Swank said.

Participants must hold a GED or equivalent. The registration deadline is May 1. Orientation is scheduled for May 4.

The course equips participants to take the U.S. Entrepreneur Certification Examination.
