CENTERBURG — Cierra Joiner had a day to remember.
Joiner scored her 1,000th career point and No. 8 seed Centerburg punched its ticket to the Division III district semifinals with a 42-34 win over No. 12 Worthington Christian in the sectional championship game Saturday at Centerburg.
The Trojans (18-6) will play ninth-seeded Bishop Ready in the district semifinals at 8 p.m. Tuesday at Olentangy Orange. Bishop Ready advanced with a 47-43 win over West Jefferson.
Joiner was among the Knox Morrow Athletic Conference leaders in both scoring and rebounding this year. She averaged 15.5 points and 8.5 rebounds a game.
Fellow KMAC constituent Danville also advanced to the district tournament. The Division IV Blue Devils, seeded fourth in the New Albany district, stopped No. 3 seed Shekinah Christian 55-48 and will play No. 2 Berne Union at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Lakewood High School in Hebron. Berne Union advanced with a 41-40 win over No. 7 Madison Christian.
Danville led Shekinah Christian 25-12 at the half, outscoring the Flames 13-4 in the second quarter.
The news was not as good for No. 21 seed East Knox and No. 22 Fredericktown. The Bulldogs and Freddies both had their seasons brought to an end by No. 5 seed Amanda-Clearcreek. East Knox fell 56-38 in the sectional semifinals, while the Freddies were knocked off 52-19. Amanda-Clearcreek will play its third straight KMAC opponent, conference champ and No. 2 Cardington, in the district semifinals at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Gahanna Lincoln.
In Division I, No. 28 seed Mount Vernon fell to No. 5 Westerville South 64-28 in the sectional finals. The Yellow Jackets opened tournament play with a 38-37 overtime win over Marion Harding.
