H. Marie Poe, age 74, of Mount Vernon passed away on Sunday, February 16, 2025, at the Licking Memorial Hospital, Hospice Unit. She was born on February 24, 1950, in Tazewell, Virginia to the late Raymond and Thelma (Brewster) Poe.

Marie graduated from Centerburg High School in 1968 and graduated from Mount Vernon Business School in the early 70’s. She worked for Mr. Pizza for 10 years. She retired from the Mount Vernon Developmental Center after 30 years of service. Marie volunteered for the Red Cross and Hospice for over 40 years.

Her favorite pastime was going to the YMCA. She loved going there once or twice every day to the pool. She had many friends there. Doug Bricker and Dave Stout kept her laughing all the time.

She loved to travel in her younger years. She visited the Colosseum in Rome, the Vatican in Italy, the Alps in Switzerland, England, Germany and she even once went to Africa to ride a camel. She took a train out west and visited many sites out there. She also had been on numerous cruises.

Marie is survived by her sister Jessie Hanna of Mount Vernon, who she called her best friend and her rock; her niece Chasity Dean of Mansfield; her nephew James (Chad) Dean III of Mount Vernon; her great nephew James Dean IV who named her “Aunt Shorty Pants” when he was younger. That name stuck with her, he was the light of her life; numerous cousins; Margaret Chaney of Mount Vernon, whom she talked to on the phone every day. After she got sick her phone was her life line, always calling friends and former co-workers to check on them. Even though she was sick with cancer, she always was thinking and worrying about other people. She will be sadly missed for her big heart and compassion for people.

Friends may call on Thursday, February 20, 2025, at the Dowds-Snyder Funeral Home from 11am-1pm. A service will follow, beginning at 1pm, with Mr. Roger Marra and Pastor Roger Conley officiating. Burial will take place in Ebenezer Cemetery.
