Nelson Andrew Riedel, age 84, of Howard, Ohio, passed away on Monday, November 4, 2024, at the Country Court Nursing Center in Mount Vernon, Ohio. He was born on October 14, 1940, in Wellington, Ohio, to the late Roy and Mabel (Pyles) Riedel.
Nelson graduated from Seville High School in northern Ohio in 1958. He went to DeVry in Chicago where he could support himself working part time as a TV repairman. He graduated with an associate’s degree in engineering technology in November 1960 and was hired by Bell Labs as a technician at their branch in Columbus, Ohio. Nelson received his Bachelors, Masters and Doctorate degrees in Electrical Engineering from The Ohio State University.
Nelson was an active member of Zion Lutheran Church. Nelson enjoyed his 1/8th scale trains and was part of the Mill Creek Central Ohio Area Live Steamers. He was a member of the Engineering Honor Society, Tau Beta Pi. His other interests were restoring Triumph sports cars, reading, hiking, and backpacking.
Engineering was his life. After retirement, Nelson was an instructor at COTC. Nelson also volunteered with multiple aid organizations where he visited third world countries and taught engineering students how to trouble shoot medical equipment. His greatest love was being around his family.
Nelson is survived by his wife of 63 years, Phyllis Marianne (Stiner) Riedel; daughter, Kimberly Riedel; a brother, David Riedel; several nieces and nephews.
Along with his parents, Nelson is preceded in death by a son, Nelson “Andy” Riedel II; a brother Roy Riedel; a stepfather, Zoid Morgan.
Calling hours will be held on Saturday, November 8, 2024, from 10 am until the time of funeral service starting at 11 am at the Zion Lutheran Church; 20191 Wooster Road, Danville, Ohio 43014, with Rev. Howard Clevenger officiating. Burial will follow in the Zion Cemetery.
