U.S. Sen. J.D. Vance (R-Ohio) will be announced Monday night as former President Donald Trump's running mate on the GOP presidential ticket.

COLUMBUS — Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine applauded the announcement of J.D. Vance as former President Donald Trump’s running mate on the Republican presidential ticket.

“Congratulations to Ohio’s Senator J.D. Vance on being chosen by President Trump to be his running mate,” DeWine said in a press release issued Monday afternoon.

“J.D. is a father, military veteran, best-selling author, and has served Ohio well as our U.S. Senator. In addition, J.D.’s unique life story will resonate with Republicans and Independent voters across the country.”

If the 39-year-old Vance is elected to higher office, DeWine (a Republican) would select his immediate replacement in the Senate. Vance was first elected in 2022 with a term slated to end in 2028.

“J.D. will also bring a new generational perspective to the ticket,” DeWine said.

“A son of Middletown, Ohio, J.D. can relate to the many Americans who are struggling right now to make ends meet in this era of crushing inflation, and a housing market that is unaffordable and shutting many out of a chance at achieving the American dream.”

DeWine is a graduate of The Ohio State University and has been one of Trump’s most vocal supporters in recent months.

“J.D. also knows that securing our border is imperative,” DeWine said.

“President Trump has made a great choice and Senator Vance will be a great partner as they campaign together this fall.”

No Ohioan has been on a presidential ticket since Warren Harding won the top office in the 1920 election, defeating Democrat James Cox (also from Ohio).

Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost also expressed his approval of the Vance selection.

Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost issued the following statement today regarding the selection of Senator J.D. Vance as President Trump’s running mate:

“J.D. Vance is a perfect pick – tough, smart and high-energy,” Yost said. “He knows what it’s like to have to fight, what it’s like to win, and what it’s like to serve.”
