In an effort to promote independence and provide a sense of fulfillment for individuals with developmental disabilities, Knox County Board of Developmental Disabilities (Knox DD) offers a variety of community programs.
Two programs, the Hive and Caregiver’s A Step Up, have recently caught the attention of Joy, a resident who is eager to embrace new experiences.
Heather White, a Service and Support Administrator (SSA) with over a decade of experience, plays a crucial role in assisting individuals like Joy.
“As an SSA, I support people with developmental disabilities and their support staff to set up needed services, ensure the quality of services being provided and help them navigate community resources,” she said.
Heather has been working with Joy since November 2022, assisting her transition from an Intermediate Care Facility (ICF) to the community. The Hive was an ideal placement for Joy as it was able to help her to foster friendship and community engagement.
“The activities at the Hive align perfectly with Joy’s desire to be around other people and stay active.” Heather said.
Joy also participates in Caregiver’s A Step Up, another adult day program in Knox County, where she enhances her life skills for daily living and expresses gratitude to the military and first responders through personalized appreciation cards.
Joy, who has been able to go on new adventures and participate in community activities, expressed her enthusiasm for the experiences she has had thus far.
“I like going to different places and doing different things,” she said.
Joy elaborated on her recent trip to Cedar Point, where she enjoyed the rides and indulged in tasty treats. She particularly relished the opportunity to ride the cars and carousels, as roller coasters were a bit too daunting.
Apart from amusement park visits, Joy has also been venturing out to stores and restaurants.
When asked about her favorite store, Joy’s response was open-minded.
“I like any kind of store,” she said.
From clothes and books to snacks and dolls, Joy is excited to explore various shopping options in the future. She also revealed her love for reading, particularly long and captivating books.
Joy’s desire for new experiences extends to the Knox DD community programs. She appreciates the opportunity to participate in different workshops and activities.
According to White, Joy is currently working on finding the best schedule and programs that suit her preferences. With her attendance at the Hive on Fridays and other locations on different days, Joy is relishing the chance to engage in crafts, visit golf courses and go on farm excursions.
Looking ahead, Joy has her sights set on visiting SeaWorld and an apple orchard in the future. She looks forward to the upcoming fall activities, such as pumpkin carving and enjoying the harvest season. Her vibrant personality and eagerness to explore new ventures make her a shining example of the positive impact that Knox DD’s community programs can have on individuals with developmental disabilities.
As Joy continues to embrace a life filled with enriching experiences, Knox County DD’s dedication to offering inclusive and fulfilling programs like the Hive and Caregiver’s A Step Up will undoubtedly provide her with ongoing opportunities to thrive and grow.
