MOUNT VERNON – A woman has been arrested and charged following a stabbing in Mount Vernon early Friday morning.

The Mount Vernon Police Department and Mount Vernon Fire Department responded to a call at 2:17 a.m. Friday regarding a reported stabbing, a MVPD press release said.

When law enforcement officials arrived at 22 Marion St., they located a 68-year-old female victim who had multiple injuries from an assault that occurred at her residence, 510 N. Sandusky St.

Officers located the suspect, 29-year-old Miranda L. Woods, shortly after arriving at the Sandusky Street residence. Woods was taken into custody and booked at the Knox County Jail. She has been charged with two counts of felonious assault. Woods is scheduled to appear in Mount Vernon Municipal Court for a preliminary hearing on July 30 at 3 p.m.

The victim was transported to Ohio State Medical Center for treatment of her injuries. MVPD Det. Matt Haver said she was responsive when officers first arrived at the scene, and that “she’s going to survive.” He could not say how many stab wounds she suffered, or where they were located.

Haver said a kitchen knife was recovered from the scene and is suspected to be the weapon used in the stabbing.

The victim and Woods are related to each other, Haver added. They both lived at the Sandusky Street residence. Haver could not say why the stabbing occurred, although he noted that the police department’s investigation is ongoing. He did not know if drugs or alcohol were involved.

Haver said Woods was arrested at the Sandusky Street residence “pretty much without incident” early Friday morning. The victim is believed to have fled to the Marion Street residence – a friend’s house – following the stabbing.

Haver said the MVPD does not believe there were other people in the Sandusky Street residence at the time of the stabbing.

According to court records, Woods is currently facing domestic violence and assault charges stemming from an alleged incident on March 21. Woods has pleaded not guilty. That case has been continued in Mount Vernon Municipal Court, with the next court date scheduled for July 21. Woods’ bond in the case was revoked on Friday, according to court records.

This is a developing story. Knox Pages will provide more information as it becomes available.
