MOUNT VERNON – A few community members articulated support for Blake Fritz, a volunteer in the MVHS guidance office, during the public input portion of Monday night’s Mount Vernon School Board meeting.
Plans to relocate and redefine Fritz’s position as a volunteer in the school were interpreted by some as insensitive to Fritz’s dedication to the guidance office, MVHS in general, and his dependable reputation among the student body. It was even feared that Fritz was no longer sought after as a volunteer.
Superintendent William Seder Jr. held Fritz in high regards and said, “We have no problem with Blake being a volunteer.” He also made a few comments on the nature of public discourse, particularly on social media, and how it can often distort information taken out of context.
During the discussion, issues of space and confidentiality were brought up. It was discussed that space was never a problem, Blake only occupied his desk for the part of the day he volunteered and his location was not a obstacle to the guidance office’s operation. Confidentiality was also discussed as not being compromised because Blake wouldn’t be given any responsibilities in assisting students with college preparation that exceeded what he was comfortable with.
In an statement at the conclusion of the meeting, the board reiterated their approval of Fritz’s volunteer work and that any controversy was likely a misunderstanding. His placement in the guidance office would be left to the school’s discretion.
The discussion brought up important points on the crucial need for volunteers in the operation of school services, such as the guidance office.
Since the nature of Fritz’s volunteer work deals largely with college preparation, the discussion also brought up the importance of personnel to help students be more aware of potential educational paths after high school.
The board also discussed:
*A contract for $4750 with AVT Company – Wayne Bower – to provide lights and sound services to the district for the upcoming school year (including Spring Musical), pending proof of insurance.
*Transportation of handicapped students for the 2016-17 school year.
