MOUNT VERNON — The streets of downtown Mount Vernon filled with ghosts, goblins and a variety of Spider-Mans as the newly exhumed Scare on the Square brought a little fright to the heart of the city.

The evening kicked off with a parade of costumes and characters around the city’s Public Square led by Mayor Matt Starr.
From the youngest guests to those who went all out with their disguises, the event offered something for every creature of the night.
But the evening saved its biggest scare for last.
As the parade rounded the final corner, the Headless Horseman made a haunting appearance (courtesy of the Mount Vernon Police Department).
Once the hallowed figure disappeared back into the shadows, parade participants were set loose into nearby neighborhoods to celebrate Halloween the good ol’ fashion way — with a little trick-or-treating.
