Roger Everett, 81, of Mount Vernon, Ohio, died on Oct. 23, 2026 at Traditions nursing home in Mount Vernon.
Roger was born June 14, 1945, in Warsaw, N.Y., to Wilfred and Minnie (Shive) Everett. He grew up in Newark, Ohio, and graduated from Newark High School in 1963. He went on to earn a degree in agricultural economics and rural development from The Ohio State University.
He married Carol (Cross) Everett in 1968 and worked for many years as a Nationwide Insurance agent in Mount Vernon, where the couple raised their children. After retiring from the insurance business, Roger launched a second career with a canoe-rental business, Riverdog Canoe Livery, which operated in Coshocton on the Walhounding River.
Throughout his life, Roger had a deep love of nature, wildlife and pets, of which the family had many. He and Carol were long-time volunteers with local rescue groups, fostering many litters of puppies and kittens. Roger also served for a time as the treasurer of the Knox County Humane Society. In his later years, he and his last dog, Simba, were frequent visitors to local dog parks.
Roger also enjoyed SCUBA diving and became a dive master and SCUBA instructor, traveling for undersea adventures in Florida and the Bahamas.
Along with his parents, Roger was preceded in death by his sister, Susan Everett.
He is survived by his wife; daughter, Wynne (David Hohmann) Everett, of Bexley, Ohio; son, Rhett (Isabel) Everett of Lakewood, Colo.; and grandchildren, Lucas Everett and Milena Everett, also of Lakewood, Colo.; sister, Betsy Bigler, of Mount Vernon; brother, Bob Everrett, of Mount Vernon; and many nieces and nephews and great nieces of nephews.
The family is planning a celebration of life in the coming months. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Dogs of Knox or Friends of the Kokosing River.
