MOUNT VERNON – The Knox County Board of Developmental Disabilities announces that two of its employees were recognized with statewide awards at the 2026 Synergy Ohio Conference.

The awards honored their outstanding leadership, dedication, and commitment to improving the lives of people with developmental disabilities.

Andrew Taylor, shared director of service and support administration for Knox and Coshocton Counties, received the Leadership Award.

Heather White, service and support administrator, was honored with the Ultimate Teamwork Award.

These awards recognize professionals who demonstrate exceptional service, innovation, collaboration, and commitment to creating meaningful opportunities for individuals with developmental disabilities.

“Andrew and Heather represent the very best of our organization and the developmental disabilities profession,” said Steve Oster, superintendent/CEO.

“Both are passionate advocates who lead with compassion, build strong relationships, and work tirelessly to help people achieve their goals. We are incredibly proud to see their efforts recognized on a statewide level.”

A visionary approach

As a leader serving Knox and Coshocton Counties, Taylor has earned a reputation for his visionary approach to inclusion and community engagement. He has led numerous initiatives that have expanded opportunities for people with disabilities, including self-advocate leadership programs, ICan Bike, family support initiatives, accessibility projects, and collaborative community partnerships.

Throughout his career, Taylor has challenged traditional thinking about inclusion by helping transform disability-focused events into community-wide opportunities where everyone belongs.

Under his leadership, staff teams have grown stronger, collaboration between counties has increased, and individuals with disabilities have gained greater opportunities to become leaders and advocates in their own communities.

“Andrew’s leadership is rooted in the belief that communities are strongest when everyone has a place,” said Oster. “He consistently brings people together, creates opportunities, and inspires others to think bigger about what is possible.”

Empowering individuals

White received the Ultimate Teamwork Award in recognition of her ability to collaborate, problem-solve, and advocate alongside individuals, families, providers, and community partners.

Known throughout the agency for her compassion, knowledge, and willingness to help others, White has spent her career empowering individuals to achieve meaningful goals while building strong support networks around them.

Her work has led to life-changing outcomes, including helping individuals become active contributors in their communities, strengthening their self-advocacy skills, and creating opportunities for greater independence and inclusion.

In addition to her work with individuals served by the agency, White is a trusted mentor to coworkers and a valued resource in areas such as aging services, nursing home transitions, and PASRR evaluations.

She consistently volunteers for agency initiatives, supports professional development efforts, and helps strengthen services across the organization.

“Heather has an incredible ability to see a person’s strengths and potential, even during difficult situations,” said Oster. “She never gives up on people and always finds ways to bring others together to create positive outcomes.”

The Knox County Board of Developmental Disabilities serves and supports individuals with developmental disabilities and their families by promoting inclusion, independence, and opportunities to live meaningful lives as valued members of the community.

The statewide recognition of both Taylor and White reflects the agency’s continued commitment to person-centered services, strong community partnerships, and the belief that every individual deserves the opportunity to thrive.
