Helen Joan Walter Bricker, age 100, of Mount Vernon, Ohio, passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 8, 2026, at Country Court Nursing Home in Mount Vernon. She was born October 25, 1925, near Cardington, Ohio, and lived a life filled with learning, teaching, travel, and a wide variety of interests.
Helen attended Cardington School for all 12 years of her education, graduating before leaving town the following day to attend Marion Business School. She worked at Marion and Mount Gilead before attending college and beginning a career in education. Helen taught elementary school in Manteno, Illinois, Mount Vernon, Marion, and Medina. She also taught in several Medina County schools before moving to Wellington, where she spent 10 years as a substitute teacher.
In 1964, Helen married Leonard Bricker. Together, they built their dream home near Wellington in 1970. Leonard preceded her in death in 1978. He had four children from his first marriage, and Helen also cherished the companionship of a beloved dog who lived to the age of 18.
Helen had a lifelong love of reading and a passion for travel. Her adventures included seven weeks in Europe, visits to most of the 48 contiguous states, a Christmas trip to Hawaii in 1974, and a Caribbean cruise with stops in Mexico, Jamaica, and Grand Cayman Island. She also attended four World’s Fairs in Seattle, Montreal, San Antonio, and Spokane.
Her many hobbies reflected her curiosity and enthusiasm for life. Helen enjoyed crocheting, bowling, crossword puzzles, codewords, cryptograms, concerts, travelogues, houseplants, and outdoor work. She especially preferred mowing the lawn, raking leaves, and digging in the dirt to cooking or housework.
During retirement, Helen remained active in her church and community. She served as a class president, secretary, and social director, visited shut-ins, and ran errands for others. She was also an officer in the Christian Women’s Club, volunteered with the Republican Women’s Club, participated in an aerobics class, enjoyed going out to lunch, and continued traveling with Eagle Rock Tours.
Always eager to learn something new, Helen had goals of getting her work published, mastering the electric keyboard, and joining the “Dancing Grannies.” Her many interests and adventures reflected a spirit that remained curious, independent, and engaged throughout her life.
Helen will be remembered for her dedication to education, her love of books and travel, her enjoyment of the outdoors, and her commitment to staying active and involved in the world around her.
Helen is survived by her brother Clarence Walter and numerous nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents she was preceded in death by husband, Leonard Bricker, a brother, Daniel Walter and a sister, Doris Stayner and a nephew.
The family will observe a private burial in the New East Pittsfield Cemetery in Oberlin, Ohio.
