AKRON – A 34-year-old man died Thursday in Akron after a shooting incident involving authorities who were trying to arrest him, according to a press release from the U.S. Marshals Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force.

Authorities stated that at approximately 8:30 a.m. members of the U.S. Marshals Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force attempted to arrest Johnathan Moore, 34, for an active felony warrant for Vandalism at a home in the 500 block of Brown Street.

In addition to his active warrant, he was previously charged with Burglary, Assault, Strangulation, Gross Sexual Imposition, and Attempted Rape. Moore was also known to own a firearm.

Officers reported making contact with two residents at the home, confirming that Moore was in the residence. Officers announced their presence throughout the home, before encountering a locked bedroom door.

According to the press release, officers made additional announcements with no response from Moore. The bedroom door was forced open, where officers observed Moore armed with a firearm.

The U.S. Marshals stated that officers gave Moore multiple commands to drop the firearm. Moore failed to follow commands, prompting an officer to deploy his Taser. Moore fired one round, striking himself in the head, as an officer fired at least one round striking Moore in the chest.

Officers reported that they rendered aid until EMS arrived on scene. Moore was transported to Summa Health Akron where he was later pronounced deceased.

At the request of the U.S. Marshals Service and the Akron Police Department, The Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) responded to the scene and will conduct the investigation.

After the investigation is completed, the case will be submitted to the Ohio Attorney General’s Office for review before being submitted to the Summit County Grand Jury for evaluation
