Earnest E. “Ernie” Lang, age 96, of Mount Vernon passed away at his home on Saturday, August 8, 2026, with his loving family at his side.
He was born on September 5, 1929, in Selbyville, West Virginia to the late Gilbert and Dortha (Ramsey) Lang. Ernie was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist City Church and later the Seventh Day Adventist Hill Church. He lived a very interesting, diverse, and long full life.
When his children were growing up, Ernie always took time to go outside and spend time with them, playing games like kick the can, andy over, and tackle football. Also, in his younger years, Ernie was an avid motorcycle rider, as was June. They once took a motorcycle trip to Little Rock, Arkansas with their two youngest children.
Ernie worked a variety of jobs including, Timken Roller Bearing, Pittsburgh Plate Glass, and Cooper Energy Services in his younger years. When he was older, he drove a semi-truck, was a pizza delivery man, a currier pigeon hauler, and his favorite, a school bus driver. Ernie loved to mow, in fact, he was still mowing his yard when he was 95 years old.
He loved sitting on the screened in back porch that he built watching the birds at the bird feeder and the squirrels and chipmunks in the yard. He also enjoyed the roses and other flowers. Ernie’s especially enjoyed his woodworking shop. Among the many things he made were a wooden bowl, wall hangings, a magazine rack, nightstands, a cedar chest, a desk, and over 30 lamps, each one different. The things he was most proud of were 5 replicas of old wood burning cookstoves like his mother cooked on during the depression years.
When Ernie and June wintered in Florida, Ernie enjoyed playing shuffleboard and pitching horseshoes. He won several park horseshoe tournaments and was a member of the Shuffle Team that won the Florida Gold Medal for three consecutive years.
He is survived by his daughters, Sharon (Don) Cooper, Carolyn Buchanan, Connie Tier; his sons, Ken (Teena) Lang, Dan Lang, Jeff (Becky) Lang; sixteen grandchildren; thirty eight great grandchildren; five great-great grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, step great grandchildren and his special canine “little girl” Panda.
In addition to his parents, Ernie was preceded in death by his wife June Lang; his grandson Shannon Cooper; his great granddaughter Chloe Buchanan; seven brothers; four sisters; and his son-in-law Roger Buchanan.
Friends may call on Thursday, August 13, 2026, at the Snyder Funeral Home – Flowers Chapel from 5-7pm. The funeral service will be held on Friday, beginning at 1pm, at the Seventh Day Adventist Hill Church. Friends may call one hour prior to the service. Pastor Chuck Gadway will officiate the service. Burial will follow in Mound View Cemetery.
