MOUNT VERNON – At the start of the year, the Foundation for Knox Community Hospital began its new capital campaign, Accelerating the Future of Cancer Care.
The goal is to raise $1.2 million for a new state-of-the-art Linear Accelerator (LINAC) to enhance radiation therapy at the Center for Cancer Care.
Cancer changes lives, but so does access to advanced treatment. The current linear accelerator has reached the end of its serviceable life, despite every effort to maintain it.
Without replacement, some individuals would be forced to travel long distances for daily radiation treatment – adding more strain to an already difficult time.
In Knox County alone, an average of 401 new invasive cancer cases were diagnosed each year from 2018 to 2022, and approximately 60 percent of all cancer patients in the U.S. received radiation therapy. Replacing this essential technology means keeping care close to home.
“With the linear accelerator’s expanded capabilities, we’ll be able to offer more treatment options and better serve our community,” says Carmen Schooley, Chief Radiation Therapist.
This new LINAC targets tumors with greater accuracy, minimizes damage to healthy tissue, improves patient outcomes, and expands treatment options. With your help, our cancer patients can receive faster access to advanced care and better results.
Donations will be matched dollar-for-dollar up to $500,000 through a generous Matching Grant from the Ariel Foundation. Additionally, the Foundation for KCH appreciates the $150,000 grant from the Knox County Foundation toward this campaign.
