MOUNT VERNON — The National Weather Service has issued an extreme heat warning for Knox County until July 2 at 8 p.m.

Temperatures will reach the mid-90s throughout the week. The heat index value, or “feels-like” temperature, is expected to reach 105 degrees.

NWS recommends drinking plenty of fluids, checking on relatives and neighbors and staying in an air-conditioned room and out of the sun.

For those looking for a cool place to stay, here is a list of places residents can go to get a reprieve from the heat:

SCRAPS Community Studio

300 Tilden Ave. Suite 6, Mount Vernon

June 30, 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. and July 1 and 2, 12-9 p.m.

The space is open to anyone who needs to cool off. Free water and popsicles are also available.

Knox Public Health

11660 Upper Gilchrist Road, Mount Vernon

June 30 to July 2, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The cooling station is located in the main conference room.

Fredericktown Police Department

182 S. Main St., Fredericktown

Open upon request of the community room, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Mount Vernon Fire Department is currently accepting fan donations in collaboration with Interchurch Social Services of Knox County. Anyone can donate to the fire department or directly to Interchurch located at 306 W. Gambier St.
