MOUNT VERNON — The sixth installment of The Washington Forum is scheduled for June 30 from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at The Gathering Place, located at 425 S. Edgewood Road in Mount Vernon.

The event is free and open to the public and will focus on “Smart Growth: Protecting and Securing Ohio’s Resources.”

It will examine how Ohio can support continued residential and industrial growth while responsibly managing essential resources such as electricity and water.

Featured speakers include Steven McElwee, Ph.D., vice president and chief security officer of PJM Interconnection. McElwee will discuss how the regional power grid operates and what PJM is doing to ensure adequate electric capacity to support population growth, industrial expansion, and emerging demands such as data centers.

Daniel Gernant is a principal engineer with Arcadis, a global design, engineering, and consulting firm specializing in infrastructure development, water management, and environmental consulting. Gernant will provide insight into Ohio’s water resources, including source water protection, groundwater recharge, water reclamation, and why Ohio’s abundant water supply has become a significant advantage for economic development.

Sam Filkins, Knox Area Development Foundation, will discuss local and regional economic development trends, efforts to attract new industry, and the importance of balancing growth with responsible stewardship of water and energy resources.

“As communities across Ohio continue to grow, thoughtful planning and resource management become increasingly important,” said Mayor Matt Starr.

“This discussion will help residents better understand the opportunities and challenges associated with growth while highlighting the steps being taken to protect the resources that support our quality of life and economic future.”
