MOUNT VERNON — Irish Hills Golf Club hosted its 11th annual Junior Golf Camp last week, creating another experience for young golfers from across the area.

The week was filled with competition, sportsmanship, and fun.

The 108 campers, ages 5 to 14, participated in three sessions, working on their skills through a variety of activities.

Participants used Birdie Balls to hit targets at giant inflatables, navigated pitching and chipping obstacle courses, and competed in numerous putting games on the practice green.

The camp concluded with a tournament that allowed campers to put everything they learned into action.

A storied history

What began 11 years ago with just nine young golfers has grown into an event that kids look forward to year after year.

Golf professional Billy Barbour and his wife, Heather, lead the program. Heather is a physical education teacher at Twin Oak and Columbia elementary schools in Mount Vernon.

John “Doc” Fowler, Hazel Peterson, Kerry Goetzman, and Jeremy Hubbard assist with the program. High school students Reese Hubbard, Grant Waers, Jake Lanning and Ryder Frazee also help.

Many former campers return as caddies and coaches to help the next generation of golfers learn the game.

“We are so grateful to be a part of these kids’ entry into the sport,” said Billy Barbour. “It’s a sport that can bring families closer together and be played for a lifetime.”

Barbour understands the family aspect of the game firsthand. His father, Bill Barbour, helped lead camp sessions alongside him.

This fall, Bill Barbour will celebrate his 50th year of owning and operating Irish Hills Golf Club, marking a significant milestone for both the family and the local golf community.

As the camp continues to grow, its mission remains the same: introducing young people to a game they can enjoy for a lifetime while building friendships, confidence, and a love for golf.
