COLUMBUS — Ella Bouton’s high school career ended the only way it could — with an elusive state championship.

Fredericktown’s four-time state qualifier in the shot put, Bouton reached the top of the Division IV podium with a career-best throw of 46-feet on her final attempt Friday at Ohio State’s Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.

“It was the last throw of my high school career so I was like, ‘let’s go for it,’ ” said Bouton, who committed to Michigan State in January. “It feels great.”

Unofficially, the throw is the third best in Ohio this spring and the 40th best in the country. It topped her previous personal best of 45-6.

She became Fredericktown’s first state champ in the shot put since Julie Algire won a Division III crown in 1995 with a throw of 41-5.5.

Bouton finished 12th at state as a freshman. She was state runner-up as a sophomore and also qualified in the discus, finishing 15th.

Last year she finished sixth in the shot and didn’t qualify in the discus.

She placed fifth in the discus Thursday and put the exclamation point on her career Friday.

“I got here as a freshman and I had those freshmen nerves. I didn’t compete very well,” Bouton said. “As a sophomore I got runner-up … then last year I got sixth, which was kind of a letdown for me.

“I really wanted to get back here and win.”

Triple Threat

East Knox’s Isabelle Bostic earned three All-Ohio citations Friday, but it didn’t come easy.

A junior, Bostic placed eighth in the 400-meter dash in a personal-best 58.44. She took a nasty spill as she out-leaned Ansonia’s London Reichert at the line to secure the podium finish.

“I got a couple scrapes and bruises but I really wanted that,” Bostic said.

Bostic joined Ava Faucett, Ellie Clark and Macie Fawcett to take fourth in the 4×200 in 1:44.11. In the final race of the meet, Faucett, Cloe Tucker, Fawcett and Bostic placed fourth in the 4×400 in 4:00.53.

Bostic qualified for state last spring in the 400 and as a member of the 4×200 and 4×400 relays. The Bulldogs didn’t make it out of the prelims last year.

“Last year’s experience was so important for us,” Bostic said. “It gave us a good introduction so this year it wasn’t so overwhelming.”

Working Overtime

Danville’s Kelsey Hackman capped a busy weekend with a fourth-place finish in the long jump. She had a top leap of 17-5.25.

In addition to the long jump, Hackman qualified for state in the 100 hurdles, 100-meter dash and 300 hurdles.

“I’m comfortable doing all four. They’ve been putting me in all four since I was in the eighth grade,” Hackman said. “That’s kind of my thing, running the (100) hurdles and the 100 back-to-back. I’ve gotten used to it.”
