MOUNT VERNON — City Engineer Brian Ball submitted a resignation letter on Thursday to Mayor Matt Starr.

His resignation is effective June 5.

“I resigned as city engineer on Thursday at the mayor’s request. I am thankful for the opportunity to serve the public and build projects that have and will continue to benefit Mount Vernon,” Ball told Knox Pages on Friday.

Ball said he is very proud of the work the engineering department accomplished over the past decade.

“This team is the best I’ve had in my career. I wish the department the best as they continue working toward serving the mission and vision of the City of Mount Vernon.

“I encourage all to give full support to the future director of the engineering department. I am looking forward to being a full-time farmer, dad, and son this year.”

Ball joined the city in October 2015. He previously worked with the Army Corps of Engineers in Huntington, WV.

“The engineering department is transitioning into a new phase of leadership following Brian Ball’s resignation as the city engineer,” Starr said on Friday.

“He has elected to take paid leave through June 5. I am grateful for all of the work that Brian has done for the city, and I wish him nothing but the best as he steps into the next chapter of his career.”

Platt appointed interim city engineer

Starr said Assistant City Engineer Quentin Platt will be the interim city engineer as the city explores new leadership for the department.

“We are giving the engineering department time to adjust before beginning the search for a new city engineer,” he said. “Our goal is to enhance communication to the public, prioritize completing key projects within the city, and work toward building a better Mount Vernon as we grow together.”

A 1998 Mount Vernon High School graduate, Ball received his master’s degree in engineering management from Marshall University in 2014.

According to his personnel file, his last performance evaluation was in 2021. Evaluations from 2016-21 state he exceeded performance standards.
