Robert Lowell Gaines, age 84, of Mount Vernon, passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 21, 2026. His family finds comfort in knowing he is now in his eternal home, free from pain and suffering, and surrounded by peace.

Bob was born on January 9, 1942, in Mount Vernon, Ohio, to the late Robert E. Gaines and Doris O. (Wheeler) Gaines.
A proud 1961 graduate of Howard High School in Howard, Ohio, Bob played varsity football and remained a lifelong Bulldog supporter. He especially enjoyed following — and often wagering on — the longtime Danville–East Knox rivalry game each year.

Following high school, Bob worked as an electrician throughout most of his career. He retired from Owens Corning in Newark, Ohio, after more than twenty years of service.

Bob truly enjoyed life, and lived it to the fullest. He loved hunting, fishing, woodworking, and riding his John Deere tractor. He also cherished spending time with family and friends at the Amvets and Moose, sharing laughs, and friendly banter, and taking trips to Las Vegas — where he was always certain he was going to win a million dollars.

Bob is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Helen Gaines; his children, Shellie Moyer, Lisa Cooper, and Joe Gaines (Dee); and his stepdaughter, Robin Campbell (Jerry). He was a proud grandfather to Justin Moyer (Laura), Chelsie Maconachy (Chad), Kalynn Cooper, Preston Cooper (Liz), Bryceton Gaines, Ryan Gaines (Gracie), and Krissie Gaines, Meghan Watkins (Levi) and was blessed with four great-grandchildren, Amelia Maconachy, Lyla Barbara, Bristol Poland and Cash Allsup, as well as his beloved dog, Buddy. Brother-in-law and Sister-in-law, Richard Cline (Debbie) and Jane Pellerin (Bill)

Although Bob was an only child, growing up in Amity, Ohio, he formed lifelong friendships with men he considered brothers: Bobby Hampton, Neil Bross, Sonny Burson and Carmel McFadden. These friendships meant the world to him, and they shared a bond that lasted throughout his life.

Bob is proceeded in death by his parents and stepson Mike Poland, Jr.
