MOUNT VERNON — The City of Mount Vernon announces the swearing-in and promotion of several public servants in the Mount Vernon fire and police departments.
Nate Hines was promoted to assistant fire chief. A member of the department since 2006, Hines brings decades of experience to his new role as he moved up through the chain of command. He previously served as a firefighter/paramedic and most recently as EMS coordinator/lieutenant.
Tom Calland was promoted to EMS coordinator/lieutenant. He joined the department in 2017 as a full-time firefighter/paramedic and has demonstrated clinical skill and leadership. With this promotion, he will oversee emergency medical services operations and departmental training.
Nathaniel Wolfe and Luke Hawbaker joined the department as full-time firefighters after previously serving in a part-time capacity.
The Mount Vernon Police Department welcomes Joshua “Caleb” Craft as a patrol officer. Craft has served in Columbus and Newark since 2018.

“Our first responders are critical to this community,” said Mayor Starr. “Whether it is through the promotion of long-term leaders or welcoming experienced officers, these appointments ensure that Mount Vernon remains a safe and secure place to live and work.”
Starr said the personnel changes reflect the city’s commitment to maintaining a high level of emergency response and leadership.
