MOUNT VERNON — Mount Vernon City School District’s 1% earned income levy failed by the narrow margin of 50.94 percent to 49.06 percent in Tuesday’s final unofficial results, according to the Knox County Board of Elections.

The measure held an early advantage, but the lead narrowed throughout the evening.

“While we are disappointed with the outcome of the levy, we respect the will of the voters and remain committed to serving our students and community,” Supt. Bill Seder said.

“Our commitment to the students and families of Mount Vernon City Schools remains unchanged. Every day, our teachers and staff do incredible work for students, and that work will continue in the facilities we have—even as many of our buildings approach or exceed 100 years of age.

“While this result is difficult, it does not change the needs that exist across our district. The Board of Education will take time to carefully evaluate the results, listen to our community, and determine the most responsible path forward,” he said.

“We are grateful to everyone who engaged in this process, asked questions, attended meetings, and participated in the vote. Community involvement matters, and we remain committed to working together in support of our students and the future of Mount Vernon City Schools.”

Results are unofficial until certified by the Knox County Board of Elections.
