MOUNT VERNON — Mount Vernon police captured two juveniles who ran away from authorities after arriving at a dental appointment this morning.

Mount Vernon police Chief Robert Morgan said the department received a call from an Abraxas counselor around 10 a.m.

“They were bringing two kids here for dental appointments to the dentist’s office on Coshocton, and [the kids] ran away from them,” Morgan said.

“One of the [Abraxas] employees was following them on foot and called us. We gathered them up and took them back.”

Abraxas Youth & Family Services provides residential community-based alternative education, detention, and shelter services. Its local office is in Shelby.

The juveniles fled to Walmart, allegedly shoplifted some items, and ran out of the back of the store into the woods. They then ran behind the Retreat at Mount Vernon.

At 10:09 a.m., a homeowner at 17762 Coshocton Road reported seeing the juveniles in his back yard.

Authorities apprehended the juveniles at 10:15 a.m. in the 17000 block of Coshocton Road.

According to the police log, Walmart plans to press charges.

Knox County Sheriff’s Office deputies and Danville Police Department officers assisted in rounding up the juveniles.
