MOUNT VERNON — Just one of three township road and fire/EMS levies Tuesday gained voter approval.
Howard Township voters renewed a four-year, 1-mill levy for road maintenance by a margin of 68.51% to 31.49%. The levy generates around $190,000 annually.
Liberty and Monroe township requests did not fare as well.
Monroe Township voters narrowly rejected a property tax replacement and increase levy for fire and EMS services. The three-vote margin was slim: 50.33 percent against (231) and 49.67 percent (228) in favor.
In Liberty Township, voters rejected a new 1.1-mill, four-year road maintenance levy. The levy would have generated $111,800 for installing dust pads in the township.
Nearly 43 percent (227) voted no, while 57.04 percent (171) supported the levy.
Liberty residents also voted down a 4.4-mill renewal and 0.1-mill increase for fire and EMS services by a margin of 59.30 percent to 40.70 percent.
Tuesday’s election featured eight townships with contested races for township trustees. Two seats were up for grabs in each township.
