COLUMBUS — Mount Vernon will host the most important game in years on Friday night.
The Yellow Jackets (6-3 overall, 3-1 in the Licking County League Buckeye Division) control their own destiny for a ticket to the postseason when Granville (6-3, 2-2) comes to town.
The top 12 teams in each region will qualify for the playoffs, with the top four seeds getting a first-round bye.
Mount Vernon is 10th in Division II, Region 7 with 14.7287 points, but could climb as high as fifth (depending on how things shake out) with a win over the Blue Aces. MV could also get in even with a loss, but would have to see how others fare in the region.
The Yellow Jackets reached the playoffs in 2020 when all schools who wanted to could compete in the COVID-year postseason. Otherwise, Mount Vernon hasn’t played bonus football since 1993.
Centerburg has already clinched a share of the Knox Morrow Athletic Conference crown and a home playoff game. The Trojans (8-1 overall, 6-0 in the KMAC) are third in Division VI, Region 23 with 16.3056 points.
Still, coach Andy Colella’s club is hunting bigger game when it visits Fredericktown on Friday night — the outright KMAC crown.
The Freddies have also clinched a postseason berth, and sit seventh in Division V, Region 18 with 14.4667 points. A win would give first-year coach Scott Spitler’s team a home playoff date and perhaps a first-round bye. A loss could send them on the road.
Danville (4-5, 2-4 in the KMAC) also has playoff aspirations. The Blue Devils are ninth in Division VII, Region 27 with 7.2222 points. Coach Matt Blum’s squad welcomes arch-rival East Knox (1-8, 1-5) for the annual Devil-Dog game.
But even with a win Danville may need some help to reach the postseason, or it could finish in the top five of the region and host a playoff game. That’s how unsettled things are in the Ohio high school football playoff scene.
Meanwhile, Clear Fork is eighth in Division IV, Region 14 at 12.6000 points. A victory at 8-1 Galion could propel the Colts as high as third and a bye, while a loss could still lead to a home playoff game in the top eight, or a first-round road trip with a finish as low as 11th.
The 72 largest schools are in Division I, while the remaining schools are divided equally in Divisions II through VII (approximately 106 schools in each division). Regional quarterfinal games on October 31 will include the No. 12 seed at the No. 5 seed, the No. 11 seed at the No. 6 seed, the No. 10 seed at the No. 7 seed and the No. 9 seed at the No. 8 seed. The top four seeds in each region will get a first-round bye.
