MOUNT VERNON — The City of Mount Vernon will begin citywide leaf pickup on Monday, Nov. 3.

“We will have three machines operating this season,” said Todd Hill, assistant to Mayor Matt Starr. “The machines will pick up all of the main streets first, then proceed to the side streets and outlying areas.

“We will make two complete passes through the city during the month of November.”

Exact dates machines will be in areas are not predictable. Citizens are encouraged to have their leaves raked as soon as possible.

Citizens may see machines being tested before November 3.

“We emphasize that leaves should be raked to the curb, but not out into the street,” Hill said. “Raking leaves into the street results in clogging storm sewers.

“Additionally, do not rake leaves around trees, fire hydrants, signposts, mailboxes, or close to intersections.

Residents may also utilize the Knox County Yard Waste and Compost Facility (7425 Thayer Road) to drop off loose leaves. The facility is open seven days a week.

The drop-off area is for loose leaves only. All bags and other containers must be removed from the area after they have been emptied.

Call the street department at 740-393-9501 for more information.
