MOUNT VERNON — Fall Literary and Writing Programs begin at the Public Library of Mount Vernon and Knox County this week.

The Library’s busy lineup includes book events with local authors, a novel-writing course, a revamped Teen Writing Program at The Annex, book giveaways, and our popular, long-running  community writing workshop, “All Write!”

No prior writing experience is required to join our creative writing programs: just show up prepared to tell your story. September programs include:  

All Write: Join us this fall for the Library’s ongoing community writing workshop for writers 18 +. Formerly known as “Authors Anonymous,” this group welcomes writers from all background.

Connect with area writers, provide feedback, learn craft tips and participate in writing exercises.

All Write! Meets Thursday, Sept. 4 and Thursday, Sept. 18, 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Mount Vernon Library. Visit www.knox.net for ongoing program dates. 

Banned Books Week: Parable of the Sower Book Giveaway: This year’s community read is Octavia Butler’s dystopian novel Parable of the Sower. The Library will host a book giveaway on Thursday, Sept. 4 from noon to 1 p.m. (while supplies last) at the Mount Vernon Library. 

Clara Román-Odio’s Memoirs From My Spirit: Author and scholar  Clara Román-Odio  presents a reading and discussion of her most recent book, Memoirs From My Spirit. 

The book “draws on works of foundational and contemporary writers of Spiritism and other specialists who address the theme of spirituality and the enigma of human consciousness.” Wednesday, Sept. 17 from 6 to 7 p.m. at Knox Memorial Veterans Hall, 112 East High Street, 2nd floor, in Mount Vernon.

The Library is also providing free copies of Memoirs From My Spirit for event attendees. Stop by the Mount Vernon Library Circulation Desk to request a copy, while supplies last.  

Hobbit Book Nook during March Through Middle Earth Mount Vernon: Celebrate all things J.R.R. Tolkien and The Lord of the Rings trilogy on National Hobbit Day at the Mount Vernon Library’s “Hobbit Book Nook.”

Enjoy a quiet spot to read, light hobbit-themed snacks, a scavenger hunt and prizes. This activity is for patrons age 12+. Kids under 15 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Saturday, Sept. 20 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Mount Vernon Library Solarium.  

Teen Writing Program: Teens age 13 to 18 can drop by The Annex to work on personal creative writing projects, take workshops, and get help with writing homework, college essays, test prep and scholarship applications. Thursdays, Sept. 18 to Nov. 20, from 4:30 to 6 p.m., The Annex, 12 East Gambier Street, Mount Vernon.  

Write Your Novel: This twice-monthly course is designed to help you finish the book you’ve always wanted to write. Participants compose new chapters for works-in-progress and participate in peer feedback workshops.

Please note that while no writing experience is required, course participation requires basic fluency in email, zoom, and google docs. For ages 18+. Workshop begins Wednesday, Sept. 24 at 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Mount Vernon Library. Visit www.knox.net for ongoing program dates.

  • Banned Books Week screening and discussion of Banned Together documentary on Tuesday, Oct. 7, 7 to 9 p.m., Oden Auditorium, Gambier.
