After serving as the first priest at St. Luke Parish in Danville, Ohio, Father Jean-Baptiste Lamy was appointed Bishop–and later became the Archbishop–of the new Diocese of Santa Fe.
Novelist Willa Cather adapted the story of his life and of the expansion of the United States into the Southwest into a novel.
She tells us about his journey westward, the role of faith and politics in a rapidly-changing region, and the development of close relationships even among those who may appear to lead very solitary lives.
