MOUNT VERNON — Downtown Mount Vernon went to the dogs on Friday as the community turned out to celebrate man’s best friend and enjoy the “Dog Days of Summer” at the August First Friday.

The highlight of the evening was WNZR 90.9 FM’s dog costume parade. The New Directions judges had a tough time, but eventually found their winners.

Summer Wiford, Mount Vernon, took home Best in Show with her 10-week-old Dalmatian, Poppi, dressed as Cruella.

The Dog the Judges Most Want to Take Home award went to Buddy. Buddy, a one-and-a-half-year-old Meorkie (Maltese Yorkie) owned by Amber Brady of Mt. Perry, was decked out in a “Day of the Dog” skull shirt.

Cole, a 3-year-old Labrador, won the Most Creative Costume honors. Owner Megan Clutter, Ocoee, FL, went with a “Summer Fun” theme, dressing Cole in mod sunglasses and a swimming safety ring.

Mayor Matt Starr announced the 2025 Volunteers of the Year to kick off the First Friday event.
