MOUNT VERNON – Monday’s sunny skies offered a fine setting when the Knox County Fair hosted harness and wiener dog races for fairgoers in front of the grandstand.

Harness races

While harness racers and owners competed for purse money, bystanders wagered their own money, hoping to score as well.

Some races were closer than others as the afternoon gave way to early evening, drawing increasingly larger crowds. The fair hosted harness races in two waves, the first starting at 1 p.m. and the second at 6 p.m.

Wiener dog races

This year’s fair borrowed a wiener dog race gate from the Canfield Fair, holding up to 10 dogs per race.

Even though some dogs technically raced to their owners’ arms first, the winners were who crossed the line first while staying in bounds, making for comical conclusions.

The races were a big hit as fairgoers packed the grandstand and area around to see some dogs cross the finish line, while others looked around, cute and confused.
