Craig Steven Colopy, born January 28, 1962, of Mount Vernon, Ohio, passed away unexpectedly on July 19,2025. Craig was a devoted son, loving brother and avid supporter of Mt. Vernon sports and the Ohio State Buckeyes.
Craig graduated from Mount Vernon High School in 1980 where he was active in track and cross country. He graduated from Rio Grande College in 1984 with a bachelor’s degree in food management. He was a member of Alpha Sigma Phi fraternity. He advanced to a job as a food inspector for Knox County before moving to Columbus to be a food inspector there. Eventually he joined the Safety Service Division and became a first responder, where he then retired. Craig volunteered at the Board of Elections and supported the Republican Party.
Craig was an avid sports fan. He loved the Ohio State Buckeyes and the Kansas City Chiefs. Craig previously served as president of the Mount Vernon Athletic Boosters and he loved and supported all Mount Vernon sports, both girls and boy’s teams. He attended most games and became a friend to the teams. He also served as a line judge for girls’ volleyball and frequently worked at the concession stands. Craig helped raise money for The Energy Field house and was honored to have his name memorialized on the plaque. He also had a passion for the well-bell being and maintenance of his yard and flower beds.
Craig was preceded in death by his father, Paul Colopy and grandparents Robert and Ila Sargent and grandmother Helen Hellwig.
Craig is survived by his mother Nancy (Sargent) Colopy of Mount Vernon and his sister, Christy Colopy of Florida and his uncle’s Gerald Sargent of Mansfield and Gordon (Jenny) Sargent of Mount Vernon and numerous cousins.
Friends may call on Thursday, July 24, 2025, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Snyder Funeral Home, Lasater Chapel, 11337 Upper Gilchrist Road, Mount Vernon, Ohio 43050. The family will observe a private graveside service.
Memorial contributions in Craig’s name may be made to the Mount Vernon Athletic Boosters, to support the volleyball and softball programs.
