About the event:
On Saturday, June 28, 2025, local organizers, volunteers, and community partners will come together to celebrate the reopening of the Lil Pantry initiative in Mount Vernon and Knox County. The event will highlight efforts to address food insecurity through grassroots mutual aid.
The Lil’ Pantry is a 24-hour “Take What You Need, Give If You Can” box in Mount Vernon, Ohio. It was started during the Covid pandemic to feed adults and children who are dealing with food insecurities.
Hosted in partnership with Indivisible and local volunteers, this community-focused event will include a donation drive and a special testimonial by Debbie Fierst, founder of the Lil Pantry, whose story has galvanized local support for food access and dignity-centered giving. All donations will go directly to Lil Pantry. Â
The event will also include remarks by Jerrad Christian, the 2024 Democratic candidate for Congress. Christian will speak from personal experience about growing up with food insecurity and address the current legislative threats to food assistance programs at both the state and federal levels, highlighting how these policies directly affect Knox County’s most vulnerable residents.
