HOWARD — East Knox FFA member Ava Page competed in the State Veterinary Science Career Development Event held at the Dr. C. Beckett Animal Science Center at the University of Findlay swhere as an individual she finished 91st and her individual score made her the 39th place team.

Teams consist of four members’ scores. The top 10 teams and individuals receive awards.

To qualify for the State finals the participants  had to place in the top 150 scores in the online general knowledge test taken prior to the state event with questions over all aspects of veterinary science. Ava was 14th overall out of 840 individuals on the online test.

At the finals members had to identify equipment and materials, parasites, dog breeds, varieties of birds, reptiles, small mammals, breeds of cats, rodents and miscellaneous animals, breeds of rabbits, poultry, and breeds of dairy cattle, beef cattle, swine, horses, goats, and sheep.

Additionally, each contestant performed four practicums. The practicums consisted of handling a piglet, muzzling a dog, properly filling a syringe, and giving an intramuscular injection.

The purpose of the Veterinary Science Career Development Event is to assess the knowledge and skills that students must possess for post-secondary education and/or work in an animal health occupation, such as in a veterinarian’s office or an animal research facility.

This is only the second time that East Knox FFA has had a member advance to the state finals for the Veterinary Science CDE.
