MOUNT VERNON — While her name is little remembered today, Mount Vernon’s Lizzie Evans, actress, comedienne, and vaudeville star, was once the toast of Broadway and Chicago theaters.

Dr. Michael Sherfy will present her illustrated story at the May 7 meeting of the Knox County Historical Society, 895 Harcourt Road, in Mount Vernon, beginning at 7:30 p.m.

Sherfy is the local history specialist at the Public Library of Mount Vernon and Knox County. He holds positions as an instructor at the Central Ohio Technical College and as an affiliated scholar at Kenyon College.

He recently did extensive research on Miss Evans’ theatrical career, beginning in the 1880s and continuing until her death in the early 1920s. During her career, she maintained ties with her hometown, sometimes appearing in productions at our famous Woodward Opera House.

The program is free and open to the public, and visitors are welcome to browse the museum for 30 minutes before and after the program. All persons interested in area history are invited to attend. For more information, call the museum at 740-393-5247.
