The City Inspector is responsible for ensuring compliance with local zoning and property maintenance regulations, utility inspections, and other duties assigned pertaining to other City ordinances, in alignment with the Ohio Revised Code.

The position involves conducting inspections of residential, commercial and public properties to verify adherence to state and local regulations.

“Mount Vernon is growing, there’s more and more going on here every year, and we’ve made great progress at keeping our City looking its best,” said Mayor Matthew Starr.

“I have every confidence Scott will continue with what we’ve accomplished, and improve on our practices. He’s always represented our City well, and I look forward to seeing what he’s able to achieve with his continued professionalism.”

Zimmerman began his career in public service at the Mount Vernon Developmental Center, a state facility where he worked from 1984 through 1997. After two years at the Ariel Corporation, he returned to public service with a position in the City’s Street Department, where he worked as a traffic signal technician, then foreman of the Parks Department.

From there he earned a promotion to superintendent of the parks’ buildings and lands.

In 2016 Scott became director of Ariel~Foundation Park, and since 2018 has been owner operator of Complete Maintenance, LLC, a small tree service and herbicide business.

“First of all, I’d like to express how thrilled I am to be back and to be able to serve the community that we live in and that I’ve grown up in,” Zimmerman said.

“Secondly, I have 30-plus years of public service between the state and local governments. In those 30 years, I have come to treasure the privilege of serving the members of our community and helping protect and sustain its growth in a positive way.”

Serving under the City Inspector will be an Assistant City Inspector. That position, which is in the process of being filled, was previously that of the Code Enforcement Officer.

The last such officer, Greg Bemiller, retired at the end of February.
