MOUNT VERNON — March is a time to raise awareness about including people with developmental disabilities in all areas of community life and the barriers they still sometimes face in connecting to the town where they live.

March reminds us that everyone is part of a broad spectrum of intellectual and physical functioning. It is a chance to be more empathetic and recognize the challenges we face.

As part of Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month, Knox DD hosted its annual luncheon on March 12.

Board member Korey Kidwell donated 14 copies of the books “Strictly No Elephants” and “Super Special Magic Shoes” to distribute at the luncheon.

Knox DD also presented seven awards to individuals for their dedication, determination, and willingness to make Knox County a wonderful place to live, work, and thrive.

  • Local Hero Award: Retired Sheriff David Shaffer, Tina Davis & Brandi Swingle of

  • Community Partner: YMCA of Mount Vernon
  • Employer Award: Wishmaker House Bed & Breakfast
