The Ohio State University Men's Glee Club

MOUNT VERNON — The OSU Alumni Club of Knox County will present a concert at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, April 6, at Gay Street United Methodist Church.

The church is located at 18 N. Gay St.

The concert features the Ohio State University Chorale and Men’s Glee Club. The theme is “Songs We Love to Sing.”

Celebrating its 150th year of singing, the Men’s Glee Club returns to Knox County for its fifth concert in the past 20 years, always impressing the audience with its outstanding harmonies.

The 75 tenors and basses recently participated in a concert at the Lincoln Center in New York City. During a November football game, they joined over 100 Glee Club alumni and the OSU Marching Band in presenting a halftime tribute to Frank Sinatra.

The OSU Chorale is a 45-member coed ensemble that features the university’s most experienced singers.

The concert is free to the public. Donations will be collected to cover the transportation expenses of bringing the singers to Mount Vernon.

Any additional money will go toward the Alumni Club’s Scholarship program, which benefits Knox County students attending Ohio State University.

The club is also seeking sponsors to help cover the cost of transporting the choirs. For more details on the concert, email the OSU Alumni Club of Knox County at knoxcoclub@osu.edu.

A brief history

The Ohio State University Men’s Glee Club was organized in 1875. It is the oldest of hundreds of student organizations available to students at the university. The group has exemplified the university’s dedication to tradition, excellence, and diversity.

During its history, the Men’s Glee Club has garnered worldwide accolades. Most notably, the group was unanimously declared “Choir of the World” in 1990 under the direction of Professor James Gallagher in Llangollen, Wales. The Men’s Glee Club was the first male chorus and the first ensemble from the United States to win the competition.

In the past decade, the MGC has represented The Ohio State University and the School of Music at numerous events. Notable performances include a concert with the University Glee Club of NYC at the Lincoln Center, convention concerts with the Central Division of the American Choral Directors Association (2014, 2010), and Ohio Music Educators Association (2012, 2020).
