Purple Letter to the Editor words on white background

As Americans, we do our best to be kind. In small and big ways, we help each other as
good neighbors.

We open doors for each other, we support Food for the Hungry, we help to fund or volunteer for efforts that assist children and families in need, and so much more. We see ourselves as kind and caring people.

However, cruelty is gaining dominance. Trump and Musk have abandoned both kindness and efficiency as they demolish an array of government programs and services.

As an example, they are haphazardly dismantling USAID, the largest aid organization in the world. USAID buys our farmers’ grain to feed children; it provides emergency medical care; and, through USAID, our country demonstrates kindness by supporting our world neighbors.

Maybe we don’t care about these benefits to ourselves and others. Might we care that we are treating our own citizens cruelly through this chaotic destruction?

Since my son and his family live overseas, I have first-hand knowledge of this cruelty. He works at an overseas embassy where Musk let go dozens of U.S. AID staff with no notice.

How would we feel if we were let go for no reason? How would we feel if we were then told our family would lose our home?

How would we leave the country in 10 days when we don’t have a home to return to in the States?

How would we tell our children that, in the middle of the year, they have to leave their school and their friends and go to a new school where they will know no one?

If that isn’t enough, how would we tell our children that we can’t take our beloved dog or cat with us when we leave.

It is just plain wrong that hundreds of thousands of our fellow citizens, at U.S. AID along with veteran and other vital agencies, are being treated with such cruelty. This is not efficiency, it is chaos.

We can stand up for the Christian value of kindness. Please take a few minutes to call Representative Balderson and Senators Husted and Moreno at 202-224-3121.

They must use their power to stop this cruel and wasteful destruction of our government.’

We the People can take back our power and reject cruelty.
