Marvin L. Hoffert, age 91, of Mount Vernon, Ohio, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, February 1, 2025, at the Knox Community Hospital in Mount Vernon, Ohio. He was born on September 24, 1933, in Union, Missouri, as the only child to the late Rev. Joseph and Rev. Minnie (Easter) Hoffert.
Having learned to play the piano at a young age, music would prove to be a constant in his life. In high school Marvin was the pianist for the Delta Harmoneers followed by a similar role with his college quartet Ambassadors. In 1955 after graduating from Olivet Nazarene College in Bourbonnais, Illinois, with a bachelor’s degree in Music Education he married his beautiful Marilyn (Lane) and then began his military service in the United States Army as a Chaplains Assistant playing the field organ. He taught music education in secondary public schools for twenty years as well as serving a minister of music at several churches. Marvin also earned a master’s degree from Webster College in St. Louis Missouri in Library Science. In 1978 Marvin became a professor at the Mount Vernon Nazarene University in Mount Vernon, Ohio until his retirement in 1999.
Marvin and Marilyn, who survives him, devoted themselves to one another for over 69 years and together had four children; Denise (Joel) Smith of Lancaster OH, Mel (Verna) Hoffert of Fairfield OH, Chawn (Scott) Flemming of Chennai India, and Joe (Kendra) Hoffert of Seymour IN. He was also a proud Papa to 11 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.
Marvin enjoyed bicycling with Marilyn, fishing, photography and gardening. Some of his collections included miniature cars and trains, Pepsi memorabilia, record albums and overalls.
The cornerstone of his life was expressed in his favorite hymn “All The Way My Savior Leads Me” as he lived out his faith in Christ Jesus. The legacy he passed down through the generations will continue to be a blessing. He is loved, he is missed but our hope is sure that we will be reunited one day.
Praise God from whom all blessings flow…
A celebration of life service will take place at a later date.
