MOUNT VERNON — In a historic and unprecedented action, the faculty of Mount Vernon Nazarene University voted “no confidence” in their President, Dr. Carson Castleman, according to a press release issued late Thursday afternoon.
In their complaint against President Castleman, the faculty cited a hostile work environment, issues with communication, a minimalization of the voice of academics, infringements on academic freedom, and unprofessional/unethical behaviors.
The vote occurred at a regularly scheduled faculty assembly on Tuesday, Jan. 28. There were 43 faculty voting in favor of the motion, 13 voted against the motion and 13 abstained from voting.
The vote has no immediate consequences and is primarily symbolic.
The Board of Trustees is not obligated to acknowledge the vote or respond in any way but the faculty release stated it is hoped this will bring about positive change in the administration of the institution.
Castleman was elected by the board of trustees of Mount Vernon Nazarene University in August, 2023 and began his term as president on Oct. 1, 2023.
