About the event:

The Public Library of Mount Vernon and Knox County invites you to the first event of its 2025 Speaker Series on Wednesday, January 22nd at 6:30 pm.

Each month, a library staff member—or  a historian, author, artist, researcher, or other member of the community—will present and discuss their research, work, passions, and stories with the public.  The series will kick off with a presentation by local historian and genealogist, Heidi Smith.

Smith, a life-long resident of Knox County, will present her research on the 1820 murder of an Indigenous woman by an area resident and further detail how she traced the life of that woman’s daughter—who was adopted by an African-American family, lived a long and complicated life in Knox County, eventually left Ohio, and finally reconnected with her tribe and her family…although not necessarily in the way she may have hoped.

This presentation and discussion will occur at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, January 22nd, 2025 in the Multipurpose Room at the Public Library of Mount Vernon and Knox County, 201 N. Mulberry Street, in Mount Vernon.

We hope to see you there.

If you, or anyone you know, wants to share their own work, research, or experience—especially as it relates to  history, people, and events in Mount Vernon and Knox County—as part of this Speaker Series in the coming months, please contact the Public Library of Mount Vernon and Knox County, at (740) 392-2665  or via email at mvknoxpubliclibrary@gmail.com.  We would love to hear your story.
