Fred “Rick” Mayhew, age 80, of Mount Vernon, Ohio, passed away on Sunday, January 12, 2025, at the Mount Vernon Health and Rehabilitation. He was born on October 28, 1944, in Ada, Ohio, the son of Frederick E. and Elaine (McElroy) Mayhew. Rick was a 1962 graduate of Mount Vernon High School and went on to earn his B.A. from Kent State University in 1967 and his Law degree from the Ohio Northern University Pettit College of Law in 1970.
Rick passed the bar on his first attempt in 1970 and became partners with the McDevitt, Mayhew, and Malek Law Firm. After serving the firm, Rick took a job with Knox County and served as the Public Defender for over 28 years.
Rick served on the boards of Hospice of Knox County and First Federal Bank. He also served as president of the Mount Vernon Country Club. Rick was a member of the Phi Alpha Delta Law Fraternity where earned the 1970 Scholastic Achievement, the Willis Society, Knox County Bar Association and Ohio Bar Association.
In his free time, Rick enjoyed golfing and has won numerous events at the Mount Vernon Country Club.
He is survived by his loving wife Carol (Smith) Mayhew, whom he married on February 1, 1980, his children, Fred (Melissa) Mayhew of Harrisonburg, Virginia, Courtney (Mark) Smith of Fredericktown, Jim (Jennifer) Daubenspeck of Meredith, New Hampshire, eight grandchildren, Miles Mayhew, Sadie Mayhew, Bryant (Lauren) Smith, Logan (Kristen) Smith, Jerica (Brandon Joyner) Smith, Meghan Daubenspeck, Nate Daubenspeck, Derek Daubenspeck, seven great-grandchildren, Lane Smith, Luke Smith, Colt Smith, Amaiyah Smith, Isaiah Smith, McKinley Joyner and Kohen Joyner.
Besides his parents he was preceded in death by his grandmother, Mary (O’Bryant) McElroy and his beloved Baby Girl.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, January 22, 2025, beginning at 1 p.m. at the Flowers-Snyder Funeral Home, 619 E. High Street, Mount Vernon, Ohio, 43050 where friends may call from 11 a.m. until the time of service. Pastor Marvin Haught will be officiating, and burial will follow in Mound View Cemetery.
