Roger Allen Markley, age 74, passed away peacefully in Mount Vernon, Ohio on December 14, 2024.
Fourth son to Mel and Lucille Markley, Roger was born on July 29, 1950 in Wooster, Ohio. He grew up doing what he loved – farming and getting into mischief with his brothers, cousins and friends. He may have been the first (and last) to ride his motorcycle through the halls of Orrville High School. He continued with that sparkle in his eye throughout life – never taking himself or life too serious and easily making friends wherever he went.
His first marriage brought him to Colorado where he became a master mason, home builder and craftsman – building several schools, stores, churches and homes, including the first home for his family.
He then shared over forty years with his soulmate, Barbara (Moran). Together they explored many places and careers- including owning and running dairy farms in Ohio and the State Line Casino and Restaurant in South Dakota. Recent health issues brought Roger and Barb back to Ohio where they settled for stray kittens, dogs and prized tomato plants in lieu of the big farm.
He is survived by his children Karrie Bach and husband David, Brian Markley and wife May, Matthew Markley, William Moran, Wendy Woody and husband Matt and Shad Morelock; grandchildren Keelie and Von Bach, Brenden, Evan and Ryan Markley, Chance, Cade and Bella Moran, Conner and Cameron Morelock and Cecilia Woody; two great grandchildren; his brothers Donald, Bob and Larry (wife Sally) Markley; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
He is preceded in death by his wife Barbara (Moran) Markley, parents Mel and Lucille Markley, brother Melvin Earl Markley and great-nephew Jon Markley.
A celebration of life will be held at the Markley farm in July 2025.
