Phyllis R. Angel, age 89, of Mount Vernon, passed away on Thursday, December 12, 2024, at her residence peacefully in her sleep.

She was born on March 7, 1935, in Clayton, New York and was the daughter to the late Herman and Dorothy (Hartman) Dorr.

Phyllis was an avid Yankees fan and a talented athlete during her high school years, where she earned varsity letters in two sports. She later became a registered nurse, a pastor’s wife, and the loving mother of four boys. For many years, she worked tirelessly on the night shift at hospitals in Upstate New York and, later, in western Pennsylvania. Her dedication and leadership kept her fellow nurses she supervised and the cardiac doctors on their
toes.

After retiring with her husband Larry, a pastor in the Church of the Nazarene, Phyllis moved to Mount Vernon. There, she became a beloved volunteer at Knox County Community Hospital. She enjoyed knitting and crocheting, gifting dozens of hats to
premature babies in the neonatal unit and creating beautiful afghans for family and friends.

Phyllis’s faith was central to her life, and she was always deeply involved in church ministry. She had a passion for missions and shared the love of Jesus Christ with others at every opportunity. She taught Sunday School for many years, often heading to class
directly after her overnight nursing shifts. Blessed with a lovely soprano voice, Phyllis enjoyed singing in the church choir and performing duets with Larry in their younger years. As a member of Lakeholm Church of the Nazarene, she consistently prayed for and expressed interest in the children’s program, recognizing their importance to the future of the Church.

Phyllis leaves behind a legacy of love and faith that touched countless lives. Each person who knew her could fill chapters of this tribute, sharing stories of the impact she made as a wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend. Her quick wit, sense of humor, practical outlook on life, and even her endearing stubbornness will remain cherished memories for those who loved her.

“Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her. Charm is deceptive and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.” Proverbs 31:28, 30

She is survived by her husband of 69 years, Rev. Lawrence Angel; her four sons, Chris (Rhonda) Angel, Ted Angel, Kevin (Sueann) Angel, and Keith (Angie) Angel; 13 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; along with four sisters, Janice Amidon, Nancy Dorr, Shirley Gerwitz, Donna Wicinski.

Phyllis was preceded in death by brothers, Wayne and Dennis Dorr, and sister, Lyla Dorr.
