Stephen Douglas Mullendore passed away peacefully November 21, 2024. Born July 12, 1945, Steve, the youngest of eight, grew up on a dairy farm in Hagerstown, Maryland. He earned a degree from the Culinary Institute of America and, after serving in the Army, was hired by Saga Food Service. He married Jeanne Coleman in 1968. In the early 70s, they moved to Ohio where he handled the food service operation at Kenyon College, Gambier. He became a District Manager for Saga, responsible for 17 different college food services in three states.
Once his daughter and son were born, Steve decided to leave college food service and in 1982 he became a Realtor, running his own agency. He was quite successful and earned many real estate awards and honors. Though he sold his real estate company in 2006, he remained an active Realtor. Steve was active in the local community through Chamber of Commerce, Area Development Foundation, the American Heart Association, on the Board of Directors for Mound Builders Mental Health Association, Rotary, and the President’s Advisory Board for Mount Vernon Nazarene University. He was President of the local Board of Realtors and served as the Chairman of the Board of Peoples Bank of Gambier. Steve was a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ.
Steve enjoyed collecting American antique clocks and classic cars, recently restoring a 1971 Buick Riviera. He was always planting a larger than needed vegetable garden. It was his pleasure to share all the produce, either fresh or in his exceptional soups and stews.
Steve was predeceased by his parents, Donald and Katherine (Richardson) Mullendore and his siblings, Jane, Betty, Edward, Jim, Alice and Carole.
He is survived by his wife, Jeanne, his children, Gretchen and Seth, grandson, Isaac, his sister Frances Mullendore Darnton, and many nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life for Steve, will be held January 3, 2025 beginning at 1 p.m. at the Snyder Funeral Home Lasater Chapel, 11337 Upper Gilchrist Road, Mount Vernon, OH 43050 where friends may call from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the service. Rev. Dr. Jay Marshall Groat will be officiating. There will be a reception following the service.
Memorial contributions in Steve’s honor may be made to Hot Meals, First Congregational United Church of Christ.
