Letter to the Editor in purple lettering on envelope

The radical right MAGA movement is firmly rooted in the Big Lie. Trump and his followers all refuse to admit he lost the 2020 election.

Their lies about the federal response to Hurricane Helene show that they are committed to the practice of spreading lies wherever they go.

It saddens me to ask this question; how can a serious candidate for any public office use a tragedy like Hurricane Helene to attack political opponents?

We know that many have lost loved ones and are trying to take care of each other as best as they can under dire circumstances.

And yet we see GOP extremists posting lies (aka Springfield) to suggest that our government officials and agencies are not doing their best to address the urgent and immediate needs of people in flood-stricken areas.

Fundamentally, as Americans, we have always and will continue to come to the aid of neighbors dealing with any kind of natural or man-made disaster.

Both Republican and Democratic Governors across the damaged area praised President Joe Biden and the federal response to the disaster.

We must demand accountability from politicians who manipulate public opinion during a natural disaster.

We need to support the communities who need help and denounce the partisan ranting from Team Chaos about Republican vs. Democrat states.

We are Americans and we stand together in a crisis with honesty, decency, and compassion. We must elect leaders who we know will do the same.
